This episode of Memories and Motherhood unfolds in two parts, capturing a mother’s journey through pregnancy, birth, and surviving one of Jamaica’s most unforgettable storms — Hurricane Melissa.
In Part 1, we sat down with Stacy Ann, while she was still pregnant, navigating life with a toddler and older child, preparing for baby number three, and managing a long-distance marriage. She opened up about the experience of back-to-back pregnancies, the challenges of parenting mostly solo, and the fears and hopes she carried into her second birth experience.
In Part 2, we visit her at home, now with an older child and two babies under two. She walks us through her raw and unfiltered birth story, the surprising realities of postpartum the third time around, and how her family made it through Hurricane Melissa with a newborn in the house. This follow-up conversation gives a full-circle look at her strength, vulnerability, and resilience.

In this episode, you'll learn about Pregnancy, Delivery and Home Births in Jamaica from a Registered Midwife. Midwife Cooper-Bernard has almost 10 years of experience in Jamaica's Public Healthcare system. She currently serves as a Sessional midwife at the Cornwall Regional Hospital, and is based at the Granville and Tower Hill Heath Centre.
Midwife Cooper-Bernard shares her knowledge on what happens during antenatal visits in public clinics, comparing the experience and education that expecting mothers gain as opposed to visiting a private OBGYN. She also discusses the stages of labour, the role of a Midwife in delivery and the differences between public hospitals vs home births in Jamaica.
Many people may not know home birthing is available in Jamaica, and even though the list of requirements is long, it is accessible for women who are having their second child up to the fifth, as long as they are not high risk.
